Hyaluronic Acid in Nigeria: What Oral Doses Can and Cannot Do

Hyaluronic acid holds water in tissue. In the knee it is part of the fluid that lubricates the joint, which is why doctors inject it there — and why the oral form in a capsule is a genuinely different proposition that deserves a straight explanation.

What it is

Hyaluronic acid is a molecule that binds a very large amount of water relative to its size. It is found throughout the body — in skin, in connective tissue, and in the synovial fluid that fills the space inside a joint.

That fluid is what lets cartilage surfaces glide instead of grind. Its viscosity depends heavily on hyaluronic acid, and that viscosity falls in ageing and in osteoarthritis.

The injection and the capsule are not the same thing

This is the part worth being clear about. When hyaluronic acid is used medically for knee osteoarthritis, a clinician injects it directly into the joint space — viscosupplementation. That route delivers the molecule where it acts, and it is a procedure, not a supplement.

An oral capsule takes a completely different path: through the digestive tract, where a large molecule is broken down, absorbed as fragments and distributed by the bloodstream. Anyone implying that swallowing hyaluronic acid is the same as the injection is skipping over the entire question of how it gets there.

What the oral evidence actually shows

Studies of oral hyaluronic acid exist, generally at 80 to 200 mg a day over eight to twelve weeks, and several report modest improvements in knee discomfort compared with placebo. The trials are mostly small, several are industry-funded, and the overall body of evidence is thinner than the one behind glucosamine or collagen peptides.

The clearest evidence for oral hyaluronic acid is actually for skin hydration rather than joints — which is why the FlexiCore seller’s own material describes it as “mainly helpful for the skin because it retains water to keep the tissues moist”. That is a fair description, and we are not going to upgrade it into a joint claim it does not make.

Why it appears in a joint formula

Because it belongs to the same tissue story as the other three. Collagen supplies cartilage structure, glucosamine and chondroitin feed the cartilage matrix, and hyaluronic acid is the water-holding component of the fluid around it. As a combination it is coherent.

Whether the amount in any given capsule is enough to matter is the same question as for the other ingredients, and the same answer applies: FlexiCore does not publish per-capsule amounts, so it cannot be compared with the doses used in research.
