How to Read a Supplement Label in Nigeria

Most of a supplement box is advertising. Five lines are not: the amount per capsule, the serving size, the form of each ingredient, the batch and expiry, and the registration number. Read those five and you can compare any two products honestly.

1. Amount per capsule, not per serving

A label may declare 1500 mg of glucosamine per serving, then define a serving as three capsules. The pack that looks twice as strong as another is sometimes the same product with different arithmetic.

Find the milligram figure and find how many capsules deliver it. Then divide the pack price by the number of days it actually lasts. That single calculation reorders most shelves.

2. The form of the ingredient

Glucosamine sulphate and glucosamine hydrochloride are different molecules with different trial records. Undenatured collagen type II at 40 mg and hydrolysed collagen peptides at 10 g are entirely different propositions.

A label that names the form is telling you it has nothing to hide. One that says only “collagen complex” is telling you something too.

3. Batch number and expiry

Both should be printed clearly, usually stamped rather than pre-printed. A missing, smudged or hand-written batch code is a reason to refuse the pack at the door.

Check that the expiry leaves room for the course you are planning. A three-month course needs more than three months of shelf life.

4. The registration number

In Nigeria, NAFDAC registration is the check that matters. A number on the pack can be searched in the public register at greenbook.nafdac.gov.ng, which returns the applicant, the form, the strengths and the approval status.

A number that returns nothing is more informative than no number at all. Search it before you commit to a repeat purchase.

5. What to ignore

“100% natural” is not a safety statement — plenty of natural substances interact with medication. “Clinically proven” without a named study is a phrase, not a citation. “Guaranteed results” cannot be true of any supplement, because individual response varies by definition.

None of these phrases make a product bad. They just carry no information, and reading past them is most of the skill.

Frequently asked questions

What if the amounts are not printed at all?

Then you cannot compare the product with the research, and you should say so to yourself plainly before deciding. Ask the seller for the figures; a seller who has them will give them.

Does an imported label mean better quality?

No. It means the pack was printed elsewhere. Registration status and published amounts tell you more than the country on the box.

Is a longer ingredient list better?

Usually the opposite. Many ingredients in one capsule often means small amounts of each, below any dose that has been studied.
